East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery is a 1.3-kilometer stretch of the original Berlin Wall, covered in murals painted by artists after the wall came down in 1989.

Reichstag Building

The Reichstag Building has a massive glass dome on its roof that visitors can walk through, offering a symbolic view down onto the German parliament below.

Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate once stood in no-man's-land between East and West Berlin, and today its quadriga statue of four horses looks out over the city as the symbol of German reunification.

Museum Island

Museum Island is home to five world-renowned museums packed onto a single island in the Spree River, holding everything from ancient Egyptian artifacts to modern art.

TV Tower

The Fernsehturm, or TV Tower, stands 368 meters tall and is the tallest structure in Germany, with a rotating restaurant near the top.

The more you learn about this place, the more it moves you.'The + comparativo..., the + comparativo...' descreve uma mudança proporcional.

I had never understood the city's history this deeply before this visit!'Had never understood... before' = 'nunca tinha entendido... antes' (past perfect).

A City Rebuilt

What used to divide this city now stands as its symbol of unity.O Portao de Brandemburgo ficava na terra de ninguém entre Berlim Oriental e Ocidental, hoje simbolo da reunificacao alema.

This former wall section is now covered in murals painted by artists.'Now covered in murals painted by artists' = 'agora coberto por murais pintados por artistas' (passive voice).

The more walls come down, the more this city has to say.'The + comparativo..., the + comparativo...' descreve uma mudança proporcional.

I never imagined a wall could tell such a powerful story!'Never imagined... could...' = 'nunca imaginei que... pudesse...'.

Doner and currywurst

The sandwich version was invented right here in Berlin.'Invented' = inventado.

Sausage, tomato sauce, curry powder. That is all of it.'Sausage' = salsicha.

Berlin runs on street food, at every hour.'Street food' = comida de rua.

Some places here are open all night, every night.'All night' = a noite toda.

Kreuzberg

Guest workers. The name says they were expected to leave.'Guest worker' = trabalhador convidado.

Their grandchildren were born here.'Grandchildren' = netos.

Turkish bakeries, street art, and a lot of noise.'Street art' = arte de rua.

They came to work, and they settled here.'Settle' = se estabelecer.

Techno in the ruins

Empty buildings, unclear ownership, and very loud music.'Ownership' = propriedade.

Reunification left whole buildings with nobody in them.'Left' = deixou.

The first clubs were in old warehouses.'Warehouse' = galpão.

No photos inside. That rule is taken seriously.'Taken seriously' = levada a sério.

The stones in the pavement

One stone, one name, in front of the last home they chose.'Stumbling stone' é a tradução literal do nome.

You have to bow your head to read it.'Bow your head' = curvar a cabeça.

Here lived. A name. A year. What happened.'Here lived' = aqui viveu.

A person is only forgotten when their name is forgotten.'Forgotten' = esquecido.

Sunday at Mauerpark

A flea market, and open-air karaoke in a stone bowl.'Flea market' = feira de usados.

Anyone can sing. Two thousand people will listen.'Anyone' = qualquer um.

You will find things nobody has made for forty years.Literalmente 'mercado de pulgas'.

Just give it a go. Nobody here knows you.'Give it a go' = tentar.

The lakes

Dozens of lakes, and forest inside the city limits.'City limits' = limites da cidade.

Take the S-Bahn. Forty minutes, and you are swimming.'And you are swimming' = e você já está nadando.

We are going for a swim, not for a competition.'Go for a swim' = ir dar um mergulho.

It is legal, it is old, and nobody stares.'Nobody stares' = ninguém encara.

Everything is closed

Almost everything closes. It is the law.'It is the law' = é a lei.

The city is alive. The shops just are not open.'Alive' = viva.

It protects a shared day off for shop workers.'Day off' = dia de folga.

Do not run out of milk on a Saturday night.'Run out of' = ficar sem.

Talking about the future

I am going to study English this year.'Going to' = plano já tomado.

That looks heavy - I will help you.Decisão tomada no instante da fala.

I am meeting her at six. It is already arranged.Usado para agenda confirmada.

I hope to have a real conversation next year.'Hope to' deixa espaço, sem soar frouxo.
