Singapura tem o inglês como língua oficial, com um sotaque próprio que mistura malaio e chinês. As frases abaixo são as que funcionam ali: do hawker centre ao metrô, com o vocabulário que a cidade usa.

São 45 frases em inglês, cada uma com o que significa e onde usar. Elas não foram escritas para esta página: são as mesmas das dez missões de Singapore dentro do PROPRIUS, e estão aqui em texto para quem quiser só ler.

Gardens by the Bay

Merlion

The Merlion is Singapore's iconic statue with the head of a lion and the body of a fish, symbolizing the city's origins as a fishing village called Singapura.

Marina Bay Sands

Marina Bay Sands features three 55-story towers connected by a rooftop SkyPark with an infinity pool, the largest of its kind in the world at that height.

Chinatown

Singapore's Chinatown blends colorful shophouses, temples, and street markets, reflecting the deep Chinese heritage of the city.

Sentosa Island

Sentosa Island is a resort island connected to mainland Singapore by a short cable car ride, featuring beaches, theme parks, and a famous aquarium.

Marina Bay Sands consists of three towers topped by an infinity pool.'Consists of' = 'e composto por'. 'Topped by' = 'coroado por/com algo no topo'.

The longer we stay, the more it glows!'The + comparativo..., the + comparativo...' descreve uma mudança proporcional.

I never expected the gardens to be so impressive!'Never expected... to be' = 'nunca esperava que... fosse'.

Trees Made of Light

Those aren't real trees — they're called Supertrees!As Supertrees sao estruturas gigantes em forma de árvore que se iluminam em um show noturno em Gardens by the Bay.

The Merlion was created to represent Singapore's origin as a fishing village.O Merlion tem cabeca de leao e corpo de peixe, simbolizando a origem de Singapura como vila de pescadores.

Those aren't real trees, are they?Ótima pronúncia! 'Are they?' e uma tag question, usada para confirmar algo surpreendente.

They get even more impressive after dark.'Get even more' significa 'ficam ainda mais'.

Hawker centres

Dozens of food stalls under one roof, and it's cheap.'Stalls' = barracas.

A packet of tissues means that table is taken.'Taken' = ocupada.

Return your own tray. It's the law now, actually.'Tray' = bandeja.

The longest queue usually has the best food.'Queue up' = fazer fila.

Peranakan houses

Chinese settlers who blended with Malay culture over centuries.'Blended' = se misturaram.

Shop below, home above. Narrow and deep.shop + house = loja e casa.

Chinese technique, Malay spices. Laksa is the famous one.'Technique' = técnica.

This is protected heritage now.'Heritage' = patrimônio cultural.

Changi

There's a forty-metre indoor waterfall. Inside the airport.'Indoor' = interno.

A long layover here is not a problem.'Layover' = escala/conexão.

Our boarding gate is at the other end.'Boarding' = embarque.

There are worse places to kill time.'Kill time' = matar o tempo.

The rules

Selling gum has been banned since 1992.'Banned' = proibido.

Littering, eating on the train, jaywalking.'Littering' = jogar lixo no chão.

There's a fine for that. There's a fine for most things.'Fine' como substantivo = multa.

The result is a city that works. That's the argument.'The result' = o resultado.

The busiest port

It sits on the strait everything has to pass through.'Strait' = estreito.

Container ships, stacked twenty high.'Stacked' = empilhados.

This whole country was built on trade.'Trade' = comércio.

Nineteen sixty-five

It was expelled. Independence wasn't the plan.'Expelled' = expulsa.

Ordering kopi

Local coffee, with condensed milk unless you say otherwise.'Unless' = a menos que.

Kopi-o is black, still sweet.O 'o' vem do hokkien e significa preto.

It borrows from Hokkien, Malay and English, all at once.'Borrows from' = pega emprestado de.

You pick it up after a week of ordering.'Pick up' = aprender na prática.

Singlish

It has its own grammar. It is not broken English.'Its own grammar' = gramática própria.

Can lah. Cannot lah. The tone does the work.É partícula pragmática, não gramatical.

English belongs to whoever uses it.'Belongs to' = pertence a.
